Output Configuration and Load Handling
Each of the sixteen relays provides a normally open contact set. You can wire each output to control AC or DC loads freely. The ABB 07 XS 81 R1 switches resistive loads like heaters and lamps efficiently. It also handles inductive loads like solenoids and small motor starters. Each relay includes a suppression diode across the coil for protection. This diode prevents voltage spikes from damaging the driver circuits. The unit provides a red LED for each output individually. This LED illuminates when the controller energizes the corresponding relay coil.
Signal Processing and Driver Circuits
The unit receives output commands from the Procontic CPU via the backplane. Driver transistors amplify the logic signals to energize each relay coil. The ABB 07 XS 81 R1 includes optical isolation between logic and field circuits. Consequently, backplane faults cannot affect the relay outputs. The unit monitors each relay’s coil for open or short circuit conditions. A fault detection circuit reports any driver anomalies to the controller. The unit defaults all outputs to a safe de-energized state during power loss.
Installation and Operational Guidelines
You must insert this unit into any standard Procontic rack slot position. The backplane supplies 5V and 24V DC power to the unit automatically. The ABB 07 XS 81 R1 draws approximately 200 mA from the 5V supply. It draws additional current based on how many relays energize simultaneously. You should verify the total load current does not exceed 5 Amps per contact. Exceeding this limit will weld the relay contacts permanently. The unit requires no external battery for normal operation. You should replace the entire unit if any relay fails mechanically.
